(Benjamin) Ben Jonson (c. 11 June 1572 — c. 16 August 1637) was an English playwright and poet, best known for his satirical plays Every Man in His Humour (1598), Volpone, or The Fox (c.

1606), The Alchemist (1610) and Bartholomew Fair (1614), as well as his lyrical poetry.

Jonson was writing at the same time as William Shakespeare and certainly knew him, but whether they were friends or not is unclear.

Ben Jonson - English History

Jonson is generally considered to be the second most important English dramatist, after Shakespeare.

Throughout his life, Jonson often had trouble with the English authorities and was sent to prison on a few different occasions. He lived in London and made a living through his writing, even being named the “first poet laureate”.
