Jack Elam was an American film actor known for his roles in western and gangster films.

He was born on November 13, 1920, in Miami, Arizona, USA. Elam's mother died when he was only four years old, and he was raised by his relatives in a less than friendly environment. He later moved back in with his father, older sister Mildred, and stepmother.

As a child, Elam worked in the cotton fields and joined the Boy Scouts, where he unfortunately lost sight in his left eye in an accident. He attended Miami High School and Phoenix Union High School, graduating in the late 1930s.

After high school, Elam enrolled at Santa Monica Junior College in California and eventually started working as an accountant in Hollywood.
